The DJs
Charlley Ward
Charlley Ward loves and has played the Blues for over half a century making the semi- finals of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis twice, and he brings that wealth of experience to his DJ sets. He has taught Blues dance or DJ’d across the country for the last decade, at events like Mile High Blues in Denver, Brickyard Blues in Atlanta, Blues and Bagels in Montreal, Steel City Blues in Pittsburg, Take My Hand in DC, Big City Blues in Ghent Belgium and Blues Muse in Philadelphia. Last year his band (The Carter Minor Band) also performed live at Muse. In 2022 he won the solo Blues Dance Competition at the Riverfront Blues Festival in Portland (Oregon.) He has also performed as a DJ in Portland. His DJ style leans heavily on modern as well as classic Blues and a tiny bit of Blues adjacent music. He is currently a DJ coordinator for his Home Scene, RDU Blues Dance in the Raleigh- Durham-Chapel Hill Triangle in North Carolina, and lives in an allegedly haunted house outside Raleigh with his two cats and Sophie the Ghost.
Kyle Patterson
The Man.
The Myth.
The Mustache.
After nearly a decade in the #MidwestIsBest brigade, he now finds himself in Oakland, CA where he can be found enjoying long walks on the beach, getting a little sunburnt, and cheering #WestCoastBestCoast at every opportunity. Come join in as he does his best to get an “okay, maybe I’ll stay for just ONE more song” throughout the night and, dare I say, into the morning…?

Ross Blythe
Ross Blythe (Santa Fe) thinks music is great, and that you should dance to it. Often, he’ll be dancing in his seat while selecting the next song. Slide some bourbon over and chat with him about what’s playing! Sure to bring the party, Ross has DJ’ed for Sweet Molasses Blues, Steel City Blues, Toronto Blues Battle, Backwater Blues, and other regional and national events. He was a staple at Chicago’s monthly event Bluetopia, as well as weekly and monthly swing and balboa dances in the city. He currently DJs around Santa Fe, NM.
Susan Olson
Susan loves many different kinds of blues music, but there are special places in her heart for ballroom blues, badass female singers, and funky rhythms. She has been the head DJ at the Blues Experiment and has also deejayed at North Star Blues, Lindy Focus, bluesSHOUT!, Blues Muse, BluesGeek and numerous other events in addition to frequent local dances in her home scene of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Susan enjoys nothing more than keeping people up past their bedtimes dancing to amazing music and can’t wait to be back home behind the DJ table.

Brandy Smith
Brandy Smith (she, her) is the DJ coordinator for Bluetopia and an active part of the blues dance community, DJing at events throughout the U.S. She is a lifelong music nerd (think former theater kid energy), she’s especially passionate about the powerful voices of women in the blues. When she’s not DJing or dancing, she’s probably making art, playing board games, or catching up on her favorite K-dramas.
Cortnie Cook
Cortnie thoroughly loves getting dancers out on the floor with a library full of tunes that’ll inspire the comfiest close embrace, get your feet movin’, and fill your soul. Some of Cort’s favorite artists include Professor Longhair, Young Rell, Tuba Skinny, Odetta, Jimmy Reed, and Etta James, just to name a few or six. Cortnie’s DJ’ed in a few places, such as regional favorites like Blues at the Bean and North Star Blues beyond the Midwest which is best housing her local scenes of Chicago and Grand Rapids, Cortnie has spun at Steel City, Blues Muse, Montreal Bagel and Blues, along with many others. The only other thing loved as much as playing those sweet tunes for you is getting to dance with y’all, so please ask!

Andi Hansen
If Andi‘s setlists were food, they’d be comfort food. Sometimes sweet, sometimes spicy, always delicious. Get your fill of party blues, gooey slow tunes, sassy jazz numbers, and more as she helps cook up some tasty nights of dancing after you work up your appetite at the blues fest.

The Bands
Matthew Skoller
and Chicago Wind
Playing @ Sunday Brunch 1-4pm
MATTHEW SKOLLER is one of Chicago’s most respected harmonica players and Blues bandleaders. For the past 36 years he has played all of Chicago’s heaviest showcase venues and toured much of the world with his super tight ensembles. Deeply rooted in the tradition of the Chicago blues elders with whom he worked and studied, Skoller has developed a unique style that conjures the past while being firmly planted in the present. His songs explore many of the issues and realities of life during this age of technology, information and horrific upheaval. Skoller, known for his fiery and engaging performances, combines passionate harp playing and singing with original song writing and prodigious production skills. He has self-produced 5 of his own critically acclaimed cds. As a producer he has produced 2 award-winning CDs by Lurrie Bell: Let’s Talk About Love and The Devil Ain’t Got No Music. Skoller penned the title cut of the latter which was nominated for Song of the Year by the Blues Awards in the US. The same album was awarded the Prix Blues by L’Academie du Jazz in Paris, France in 2012. Between 2009 and 2016 Matthew played on four Grammy nominated CDs: Chicago Blues: A Living History and Still I Rise, by Heritage Blues Orchestra, Muddy Waters 100 (Raisin’Music) and Lurrie Bell’s Can’t Shake This Feeling (Delmark 2016)
Young Rell
A dexterous and inventive guitarist and a fat-toned harmonica phenom, Young Rell is already a commanding vocalist and a poetic and poignant songwriter. Whether he is accompanying himself on guitar while playing harmonica on a rack and singing, or alternating between guitar and harmonica with an ensemble, Young Rell sings his songs with sincerity and without a hint of affectation, working the stage with the poise and charisma of a veteran performer.
A prolific and engaging presence on social media, Young Rell has created a global community of fans and followers who have not only praised his talent but engaged enthusiastically with him on the subject of musicianship, musical instruments and past generations of famous and obscure blues inspirations.
